Charity Shop Manager - Alfreton
Do you want to help raise funds for rescue animals in the heart of your local community?
We’re opening a brand new charity shop in Alfreton, and we’re looking for a Shop Manager to lead it from day one!
This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of the team setting up our newest shop. You’ll help shape how it looks and runs, and you’ll help maximise the income that funds the care of rescue animals across Derbyshire.
As an independent, self-funded local charity, our shops play a vital role in generating the income we need to provide food, shelter, veterinary treatment and second chances for animals who need us most. This role is key to helping us achieve strong sales, maintain high standards and create a welcoming shop environment for our customers and volunteers.
Reporting to our Retail Development Manager, you’ll have overall responsibility for the day-to-day running and performance of the shop. You’ll build and lead a fantastic team of volunteers and make the shop a welcoming part of the Alfreton community.
About the role
This is a hands-on retail management role where you’ll take the lead on all aspects of the shop, from getting it ready to open its doors to building it into a thriving local shop.
Responsibilities include:
- Taking overall responsibility for achieving sales, profit and income targets
- Maximising sales through effective stock sourcing, pricing, processing, rotation and space allocation
- Developing stock and income opportunities, including house collections, local partnerships and community activities
- Recruiting, training, motivating and retaining a team of volunteers, and line managing Deputy Managers or other staff
- Managing shop expenditure within agreed budgets and supporting the development of the annual shop plan
- Ensuring high standards of customer service, merchandising, window displays and presentation throughout the shop
- Overseeing cash handling, banking, security and accurate administrative procedures
- Promoting Gift Aid and ensuring the scheme is operated correctly
- Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety, Trading Standards, Retail Law and RSPCA Derby policies
- Managing the shop’s online sales where applicable
- Promoting the shop and the work of RSPCA Derby within the local community
Because we’re a small retail team, this role suits someone who is practical, proactive and enjoys being part of a supportive team.
Hours: 28-35 hours per week (4-5 full days)
Salary: £13.99 per hour
Location: Alfreton town centre
Start date: Estimated mid-February 2027 (TBC)
Weekend working is essential, and some Bank Holiday working may be required. You may occasionally be asked to provide cover at our other charity shops.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in retail, with previous experience in a supervisory or management role
- Confident leading, motivating and developing staff and volunteers
- Organised and commercially aware, with experience of managing stock and working towards targets
- Friendly and customer-focused, with strong communication skills and the confidence to handle complaints and difficult situations
- Able to manage budgets, monitor performance and maintain accurate financial records
- Reliable, honest and able to lead by example
- Proactive, adaptable and positive about embracing change and new ideas
- Comfortable handling cash, operating a till and using computers
At least two years’ experience in charity retail, managing a shop or volunteers, or fashion, furniture, homeware or department store retail would be beneficial. Knowledge of Gift Aid, retail law, Trading Standards or Health and Safety regulations would also be beneficial, as would a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle, but none of these are essential.
You must share our commitment to animal welfare and the work of RSPCA Derby.
