Deputy Charity Shop Manager - Alfreton
Do you want to help raise funds for rescue animals in the heart of your local community?
We’re opening a brand new charity shop in Alfreton, and we’re looking for a Deputy Manager to help us get it off to a flying start!
This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of the team setting up our newest shop. Working alongside the Shop Manager and other Deputy Manager, you’ll help get the shop ready to open its doors, and you’ll help maximise the income that funds the care of rescue animals across Derbyshire.
As an independent, self-funded local charity, our shops play a vital role in generating the income we need to provide food, shelter, veterinary treatment and second chances for animals who need us most. This role is key to helping us achieve strong sales, maintain high standards and create a welcoming shop environment for our customers and volunteers.
Once we’re open, you’ll help ensure the shop runs smoothly, safely and successfully, while supporting and motivating our fantastic volunteer team.
About the role
This is a hands-on retail role where you’ll support all aspects of shop management and step up to lead when required.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Shop Manager to achieve sales and profit targets
- Ensuring high standards of merchandising, presentation and display throughout the shop
- Helping manage stock sourcing, pricing, rotation and space allocation to maximise sales
- Assisting with the recruitment, induction, training and support of volunteers
- Opening and closing the shop when required, and taking responsibility for the security of the premises, stock and cash
- Supporting with cash handling, daily banking and accurate administrative procedures
- Supporting the shop’s online sales, including listing items, answering queries and dispatching orders
- Promoting Gift Aid and other income-generating initiatives
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping, organisation, cleanliness and safety
Because we’re a small retail team, this role suits someone who is practical, proactive and enjoys being part of a supportive team.
Hours: 14-21 hours per week (2-3 full days)
Salary: £11.07-£12.96 (2% above minimum wage, dependent on age)
Location: Alfreton town centre
Start date: Estimated mid-February 2027 (TBC)
Weekend working is essential, and some Bank Holiday working may be required. You may occasionally be asked to provide cover at our other charity shops.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in retail or customer service
- Confident motivating and supporting volunteers and colleagues
- Organised and results-focused, with good planning skills
- Friendly and customer-focused, with strong communication skills
- Reliable, honest and trustworthy
- Proactive and able to use their own initiative to make good decisions
- Flexible, adaptable and a real team player
- Comfortable handling cash and operating a till
At least two years’ retail experience, particularly in charity retail, fashion, homeware or a department store, would be beneficial, as would supervisory or online sales experience. Strong merchandising and display skills, knowledge of Gift Aid, retail law, Trading Standards or Health and Safety regulations, and a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle would also be helpful, but none of these are essential.
You must share our commitment to animal welfare and the work of RSPCA Derby.
