Deputy Charity Shop Manager - Ilkeston

Do you want to help raise funds for rescue animals in the heart of your local community?

RSPCA Derby is looking for a Deputy Manager to support the day-to-day running of our Ilkeston Charity Shop, a furniture and larger goods store, and help maximise the income that funds the care of rescue animals across Derbyshire.

As an independent, self-funded local charity, our shops play a vital role in generating the income we need to provide food, shelter, veterinary treatment and second chances for animals who need us most. This role is key to helping us achieve strong sales, maintain high standards and create a welcoming shop environment for customers and volunteers alike.

Working alongside the Shop Manager, you'll help ensure the shop runs smoothly, safely and successfully, while supporting and motivating our fantastic volunteer team.

About the role

This is a hands-on retail role with a strong physical element, where you'll support all aspects of shop management and step up to lead when required. As a furniture store, the role involves the regular moving, handling and displaying of larger donated items, so confidence with manual handling is essential.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Shop Manager to achieve sales and profit targets
  • Ensuring high standards of merchandising, presentation and display throughout the store
  • Helping manage stock processing, rotation, pricing and space allocation to maximise sales
  • Assisting with the movement, handling, display and sale of furniture and larger donated items
  • Supporting the safe loading, unloading and positioning of furniture and stock deliveries
  • Assisting with the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers
  • Opening and closing the shop when required, ensuring trading hours are adhered to
  • Supporting with cash handling, banking and accurate administrative procedures
  • Promoting Gift Aid and ensuring the scheme is operated correctly
  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping, organisation and cleanliness
  • Monitoring and responding to online furniture collection enquiries when needed, to support efficient scheduling

Because we're a small retail team, this role suits someone who is practical, proactive and physically fit, and who enjoys being part of a supportive team.

Hours: 24.5 hours per week (3.5 days)

Salary: £11.07-£12.96 (2% above minimum wage, dependent on age)

Location: Ilkeston Charity Shop, 22 Bath Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. DE7 8FB.

Weekend working is essential, and some Bank Holiday working may be required.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced in retail or customer service (charity retail or furniture experience is a bonus)
  • Physically able to carry out regular manual handling tasks safely and confidently
  • Confident supervising or supporting volunteers or team members
  • Organised and commercially aware, with a focus on achieving results
  • Friendly and customer-focused, with strong communication skills
  • Reliable, honest and able to take responsibility when required
  • Proactive and able to use their own initiative
  • Flexible and adaptable in a busy retail environment
  • Comfortable handling cash and operating a till

Strong merchandising and display skills would be beneficial, as would knowledge of retail law, Trading Standards or Health and Safety regulations, but these are not essential.

You must share our commitment to animal welfare and the work of RSPCA Derby.
