Volunteer Van Driver

Why do we need your help?

As an independent, self-funded charity, our network of charity shops plays a vital role in funding the care of rescue animals across Derbyshire. Donations from the public help generate the income we need to provide food, shelter, veterinary treatment and second chances for animals who need us.

Our Volunteer Van Drivers help make this possible. By collecting donated items from members of the public and transporting stock between our charity shops and storage units, you’ll be supporting the smooth running of our retail operation and helping turn unwanted items into vital funds for rescue animals.

What will you be doing?

  • Driving our van to collect donated items from members of the public across our branch area
  • Transporting donations to our shops or storage units
  • Moving stock between our charity shops and storage units to support the retail team
  • Liaising with our Retail Development Manager and shop teams to coordinate collections and deliveries
  • Loading and unloading items into and out of the van
  • Representing RSPCA Derby positively when meeting members of the public during collections

Our branch area covers a wide part of Derbyshire, roughly from Uttoxeter to Sandiacre in the south, to Alfreton in the north-east, and into the southern Peak District in the north-west.

The skills you need

  • A full, clean manual UK driving licence
  • Confident driving a medium-sized van
  • Age 18+ (required for insurance purposes)
  • Physically fit and able to lift and carry heavy items
  • Friendly and approachable when meeting members of the public
  • Reliable and able to commit to agreed volunteer shifts
  • Comfortable working as part of a small team and communicating with staff and volunteers

This role is suitable for anyone who is physically able to lift and carry heavier items, regardless of age or gender.

You will need to be able to travel to Abbey Street in Derby, where our van is stored and where each shift begins.

Time commitment

  • 4-6 hours per shift
  • 2-3 shifts available per week

Exact days and times can be agreed, but volunteers need to be able to commit to the same shift(s) each week

What’s in it for you?

  • Help raise vital funds for rescue animals across Derbyshire
  • Meet new people and become part of a friendly volunteer team
  • Spend time out and about in the community while supporting a local charity
  • Gain experience supporting the retail side of a busy animal charity
  • Invitation to our annual Volunteer and Staff celebration to see how your support helps local rescue animals
