Why a gift in your will means so much

We've been caring for animals in Derby for over 150 years, and sadly, they'll continue to need us for many more years to come. We're an independent, self-funded charity, receiving no funding from the government or the national RSPCA, so gifts like these are essential to our future.

In the last decade alone, we've rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed over 7500 animals. As the number of animals needing our help keeps growing, gifts in wills help us make sure we're still here for them.

The impact of a gift

An elderly chihuahua is wrapped in a towel and being held by a member of staff in our vet room

Our centre on Abbey Street is small, so we're always finding new ways to make the most of our space. A gift left to us in a will helped us convert an old store room into a vet room where our animals have their check-ups and treatments.

Whatever size gift you're able to leave, it will help improve the lives of the animals who need us most.

The kind of gift you can leave

There are a few ways to leave a gift to RSPCA Derby in your will, and your solicitor can talk you through what suits your circumstances:

A share of your estate (a residuary gift)

A fixed sum of money (a pecuniary gift)

An item of value (a specific gift)

Do I have to leave a gift to RSPCA Derby to use the free wills offer?
Not at all, there's no obligation whatsoever. We hope you'll consider it, but the free wills offer is available to anyone in the UK aged 18+, whether or not you choose to include a gift to us.

Will I have to write my will in person?
Not necessarily. Most solicitors in the network offer appointments by phone or online, as well as in person, so you can choose whichever works best for you.

The free offer covers simple and mirror wills. If your circumstances are more complex, your solicitor will discuss any additional costs before you start so you can decide if you'd like to proceed.

What if I already have a will?
You can use the offer to update or rewrite an existing will, so it reflects your current circumstances.

What happens after I sign up?
You'll be sent a pack with a choice of local solicitors. You'll need to contact one within 30 days of receiving it.

How do I make sure my gift reaches RSPCA Derby?
Please ask your solicitor to name us as: RSPCA Derby & District Branch, Charity Number 222620.

"I wanted to support a local centre"

Lisa and Tia

"I am passionate about the welfare of animals, especially dogs, as they’ve been part of my family for many years. I particularly wanted to support a local centre so there would be an impact in the area where I live. Derby RSPCA are self funded so I decided to help them continue their amazing work. That's why I have left them a gift in my will." - Lisa, RSPCA Derby supporter
