Roo and Willow's incredible transformation

Roo and Willow, young cockapoos, are sitting on a sofa after having an intensive grooming session. They are both wearing coats to help keep them warm and have very happy expressions on their faces.

Two-and-a-half year old Cockapoo sisters Roo and Willow came to us in one of the worst conditions our team has ever seen. Their coats were matted so severely that the fur was fused tightly to their skin across their entire bodies. Their nails were badly overgrown, and they both had painful urine burns where damp fur had been pressed against their skin. We don't believe they had ever been properly groomed.

Because the matting was so extreme, Roo and Willow needed to be taken to our vet to be sedated so the team could work slowly and carefully, cutting away years of tightly packed fur without causing further pain or distress.

It took three people more than three hours to completely shave the girls and the smell of urine was overwhelming. When it was finally done, the fur removed from Willow (above) weighed 10% of her body weight and Roo's (below) weighed 9%.

They spent the night recovering, and the transformation the next morning was extraordinary. Two dogs who had barely been able to move were now bouncing around, playing, and full of life. They clearly felt the relief of being comfortable for the first time in a very very long time.

Stories like Roo and Willow's are a reminder of why the work we do behind the scenes matters so much. The hours of painstaking, careful effort that go into helping animals who have suffered for far too long aren't always visible, but they make all the difference.

As an independent, self-funded charity, we rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters to provide care like this. Every donation helps us be there for the next Roo and Willow.
